Khartal Cymbal Indian Musical Instrument

Khartal Cymbal Indian Musical Instrument

  • Folk cymbal music instrument from India.
  • Two pieces to be held in the same hand.
  • One has hole for thumb, and other for four fingers.
  • Material - wood and brass, Length - 9 inches, Width - 3 inches.
  • Made by music instrument artisans of Bareilli in north India.
Khartal or Kartal is an ancient cymbal music instrument from India. It has always been a favorite with saints and seers. Even today we find kahrtal being used in temples and gurudwaras. Kara means hand and tala means clapping. Despite being used for devotional music it has carved an important place for itself amongst the exponents of folk music in India. Kahrtal comprises two similar shaped wooden pieces and is approximately eight to twelve inches long and two to three inches wide. Small round brass prices are affixed over these wooden pieces. One of the pieces has a space for the thumb and the other to hold four fingers. khartal is played by the same hand.

NB: This is a folk music instrument and is handcrafted by the artisans of village India. The folk music instruments are usually meant for sale in the rural local markets. The artisans use very simple and age old tools to make folk music instruments. Almost all folk music instruments therefore lack the finesse that we often see in classical instruments.

TRUE or FALSE: The “Beatles” invented the first music video because they got tired of “Beatlemania”?

Question by Bumble: TRUE or FALSE: The “Beatles” invented the first music video because they got tired of “Beatlemania”?
Beatlemania was a term used during
the 1960s to describe the fan frenzy
particularly demonstrated by young
teen girls directed toward The Beatles
during the early years of their success.

‘Beatlemania’ was characterised by
intense levels of hysteria at the actual
concerts played by the band and during
the band’s arrivals and travels to and
from locations.

The Beatles never took it seriously but
felt themselves “trapped” by their own
popularity.

In 1965 the Beatles quit touring because
they stated that the “screaming of the fans
got to a point that they could not even hear
their own instruments”

The Beatles were tired of the road, tired of
each other, and tired of the “bubblegum pop”
that the studios had been demanding from
them…

it was time for a change

Paul came up with the idea of a fictitious
band and to “further the illusion” by going
so far as actually laying down tracks as
this group to give them the much needed
freedom that they desperately wanted for
experimentation..

It was Lennon’s sense of humour that the
group would be modelled after a marching
band that he had seen on the ‘telly’ after
a session of recreational drug usage

“Sgt. Pepper’s
Lonely Hearts
Club Band”

To officially mark the end of “Beatlemania”
and the second coming of the Beatles the
group had to fill the void to keep their fans
and the studios happy

“Strawberry Fields Forever” took the promotional
film format to a new level. They used techniques
borrowed from underground and avant garde film,
including reversed film and slow motion, dramatic
lighting, unusual camera angles and color filtering
added in post-production.
Reflecting the fact that the group no longer wanted
to perform live, the group decided to let the songs
speak for themselves

The music video was born…

True or False

**
False…

The studios never held back the
Beatles… but it was indeed time
for a change —

They experimented with
“Revolver” – which is now considered
one of the most important albums of
all time..

“Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields”
would come later – both marking a
change from touring to purely studio

While the Beatles did use the video
format and played with it – they were
not the first
